  16. <p>     A subversive British import, Absolutely Fabulous, debuts
  17. </p>

  20. <p>     Edina is a fashion publicist--and fashion victim--a single
  21. mom trying to cope with a teen-age daughter. Patsy, Edina's
  22. best friend, is a fashion editor, a stylish bachelorette perpetually
  23. seeking a good time. Edina and Patsy shop, vacation and cavort
  24. together. And, oh, yes, they sleep around, curse, drink to excess
  25. and smoke cigarettes and dope. Lucy and Ethel gone awry, Edina
  26. and Patsy are the main characters in Absolutely Fabulous, a
  27. wildly successful British sitcom about to make its U.S. debut.
  28. Beginning with a 12-episode marathon this Sunday (with weekly
  29. reruns of each episode), AbFab, as the Brits call it, will air
  30. on cable's Comedy Central.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>     In an era of aggressive abstemiousness, we can be grateful to
  33. Comedy Central for picking up AbFab, even if it is a bit of
  34. a disappointment. The playing is broad, not all the references
  35. travel well, and seeing two middle-age women get tipsy--and
  36. even falling-down drunk--can quickly become tiresome. Still,
  37. the show delivers risque humor (Patsy to Edina: "Have you got
  38. some knickers I can borrow, sweetie? I didn't get home last
  39. night"). Trendiness is neatly skewered (Edina's into aromatherapy,
  40. reflexology and rebirthing). And the stars are abfab. Jennifer
  41. Saunders, who writes the show and plays Edina, can evoke both
  42. laughter and sympathy just belly-sliding down a flight of stairs.
  43. And Joanna Lumley is delicious as Patsy, ogling a leather-jacketed
  44. adolescent, chasing a handsome stranger into an airplane loo
  45. or casually pulling a pregnancy-test kit from her purse.
